On December 1979, Seoul had been enduring a harsh winter before the upcoming spring. After the assassination of President Park, martial law has been declared. A coup d’état bursts out by Defense Security Commander Chun Doo Kwang and a private band of officers following him. Capital Defense Commander Lee Tae Shin, an obstinate soldier who believes the military should not take political actions, fights against Chun Doo Kwang to stop him. The conflict between the two grows while military leaders are holding their decision and Defense Minister is gone. In the midst of chaos, the spring of Seoul that everyone longed for heads to unexpected direction.

Philosophy teacher Jung-in and his wife Hyun Suk have done pretty well for themselves and decide to trade in the hustle and bustle of Seoul for an idyllic house next to a lake in the remote countryside. Ideal for dreaming up his new book. Aaah yes – the blissful silence, the chirping birds in the trees, the quietly rippling pond… and a friendly, elderly neighbor, Yuk Nam, paying them a visit on their first day. At 4 o’clock sharp he appears in front of their door, sits down on the couch and then, for the next two hours, becomes some sort of black hole where all the conversation-making attempts of the couple die a slow, crawling death, only occasionally met with grumbling, monosyllabic answers. At 6 o’clock sharp the man suddenly stands up and leaves. What a relief! That must’ve been the most awkward two hours they’ve spent. Surely, the man felt it his duty to pay them a visit out of sheer politeness and that’s the end of it. Except, the very next day at 4 o’clock their doorbell rings. Oh, neighbor! What a lovely surprise! Won’t you sit down? Again followed by two excruciatingly slow hours of awkward silence. A ritual that keep unfolding in front of their unbelieving eyes on day three, four, five, sixteen, slowly driving them mad. And the neighbor’s wife has yet to make her appearance…

When he thinks about calling it a day, a man named Geum Hyuk Soo asks Oh Taek to drive him to the port city of Mokpo. He offers a million won (~$1,000) to drive him. Oh Taek accepts the drive, but Oh Taek is not aware that Hyuk Soo murdered a man, and he is planning to stow away on a boat. Meanwhile, Hwang Soon Kyu is the mother of the man who was murdered by Hyuk Soo. She chases after her son’s killer.

Meanwhile, Lan Jue is a young, well-mannered minister who hides a secret from his youth that he does not want to reveal to anyone. As Lan Jue is going about his business, trying to solve a case, his path crosses with that of Zhang Ping. Despite some misunderstandings, Zhang Ping manages to help Lan Jue solve the case – although the former also inadvertently learns the latter’s secret. But this incident turns into the beginning of a remarkable partnership.

The two men develop a close bond – despite their very different backgrounds. And together, they resolve to solve all manner of mysteries, including what really happened to Lan Jue’s father – and rid the royal court of corruption once and for all!
