In 1905, Japan forced Korea to sign the Eulsa Treaty, stripping the nation of its diplomatic rights and reducing the entire peninsula to a Japanese colony. By 1909, when Harbin begins, Korea’s small but tenacious Righteous Army militia is deep into a campaign of armed resistance against the Japanese. After emerging as the sole survivor of an especially bloody skirmish, Ahn Jung-geun (Hyun) heads an operation to assassinate Itō Hirobumi, the first Japanese Resident-General of Korea and a key symbol of violent colonial oppression.

The operation will require Ahn and his cohort to travel clandestinely into Russia, gathering resources and allies while concocting elaborate decoys. With terrifying risks at every turn, murderous security forces on their tail, and the entire plan under constant threat of collapse, the question arises: how many Koreans must die for the sake of their country’s independence?

Cheol Ung, a newcomer, is assigned to the Rescue Unit of the Fire Station in Seoul. Soon, he is sent on his first mission with Jin Seop, a veteran fireman working with a glorious title: the man who saved the highest number of people in the fire. While being overwhelmed by fierce fire and pouring smoke, Cheol Ung witnesses that Jin Seop forces to search the occupant contrary to the chief’s withdrawal order. Just before the fire gobbles up the building, Jin Seop manages to escape with a girl in his arms, but a colleague loses his life. Cheol Ung’s fear becomes anger against Jin Seop, and he blames him for his colleague’s death. When their conflict is still at its peak, they’re called for another fire scene, which changes their fate for good.

Set in a small rural town in 1999 where a recording tape containing a mysterious serial murder and an unidentified bizarre sound is discovered.

In 1989, terrorist Jo Kyung Ho came back to South Korea after studying in Japan and released sarin gas at a train station in his hometown, killing passengers and subsequently being sentenced to life in prison after turning himself in. His daughter, Jo Jae Young, is sent to live with her aunt, Kyung Ho’s younger sister, Jo Jung Hyun.

Ten years later, a murder case takes place in the small town with Detective Choi Hyung being put in charge. Suspecting that the case is somehow related to the terrorists, Choi Hyung, who is consumed with the guilt of failing to prevent his wife’s death 10 years ago in the terrorist attack, begins investigating when Jung Hyun’s niece suddenly goes missing. Jung Hyun now must come face to face with tragedy once again and she teams up with Choi Hyung to discover the truth and find her niece.
